DR LAURELLE BATES BVSC (HONS) BVMS: PRACTICE PRINCIPAL & SENIOR VETERINARIAN
Practice Principal & Senior Veterinarian: Laurelle is a local Veterinarian who grew up in Darwin’s rural area. Laurelle was involved in the polo-cross, equestrian and horse racing scene for many years. Laurelle has over 23 years experience in the veterinary industry by working her way through the ranks starting as kennel hand, then vet nursing, doing a double major in biomedical and veterinary sciences, an honours thesis in the Northern Territory anaesthetising crocodiles, before graduating from Veterinary Medicine and Surgery at Murdoch University in 2004.
Laurelle and her partner, Robert Johns like to spend their weekends at Marakai with their cattle & family. Laurelle also loves her fishing and is a part of the elusive “100 club” with a 104 cm barramundi caught on a helifishing trip. Her family currently has 4 dogs, "Cooper" a Catahoula, "Gypsy" a Kelpie cross, "Red" a Red Heeler, and "Bindi" the rescue dog that is a Maltese cross. Then there is "Jacomi" the pony and “Pixie” a miniature pony. Laurelle and her partner Robert have 4 children between them, only one of which is still at home, and to date 6 grandchildren.
DR STORM GIFFORD BVSCBVMS (HON): VETERINARIAN
Storm re-joined our team late 2016. Storm who is originally from Zimbabwe, has resided in Darwin on and off for 17 years and lives with her daughter Indie Rose and their 4 horses, 2 dogs, and 5 cats in Bees Creek. Storm is among other things completing her Masters in Veterinary Conservation Medicine and enjoys camping and polocrosse.
KAELI MENGERSEN: VETERINARY NURSE
Kaeli joined our team in May 2015 soon after moving to Darwin from South Australia. She grew up on her family sheep property ‘Depot Springs’ in SA. She completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2012 after working for three years as a trainee veterinary nurse at Clare Valley Veterinary Services. Before moving to the NT she worked on a pharmaceutical sheep farm, where they manufactured antivenin for humans from sheep blood. She has always had an interest in animals and science and was keen to get back into the veterinary industry after 2 years in other jobs.
When her partner David was offered a job in Darwin they made the decision to make the big move to Darwin. With them they bought Kaeli’s two horses ‘Lucille’ and ‘Wolfpack’. Kaeli enjoys competing in barrel racing, campdrafts and gymkhanas on weekends. She also has a strong interest in and holds a certificate for ‘Equissage’ in horses. Since living in Darwin they have aquired two catahoula dogs 'Houla' and 'Butter'
ZOE CHIN: VETERINARY NURSE
Zoe began working here in November 2014. She has completed her certificate II in veterinary nursing and has a strong interest in the industry. She is very compassionate with all animals and is dedicated to making sure they get the best possible care when they are in our practice.
Zoe lives at Marrakai with her husband Matt and two daughters Ava and Nala. She loves going fishing, camping, hunting, and taking her daughters horse riding.
OLIVIA PLUME: TRAINEE VETERINARY NURSE
Oli joined the Girraween Veterinary Hospital team in October 2016. Oli has worked for many years in varying positions associated with crocodile farming, crocodile egg collecting and at a local wildlife park. Oli will be embarking on completing her certificate 4 in veterinary nursing. Oli and her partner Jesse live in Southport with their 3 dogs and Oli’s collection of crocodiles, lizards, geckos and snakes.
KATY LAUDICINA: TRAINEE VETERINARY NURSE AND RECEPTIONIST
Katy become our receptionist in October after being a volunteer placement student with the clinic for 6 months. Katy was travelling the world until she met her husband while working at Corroboree tavern. Katy and Sam live in Marrakai with their troupe of dogs and the newest family member Boris the boar. Katy is completing her Certificate 4 in Veterinary Nursing.
KYLA FAWCETT: TRAINEE VETERINARY NURSE
Kyla Fawcett is one of our new nurses. She is currently studying her Cert 4 in Veterinary Nursing and enjoys polocrosse, camp drafting, camping and fishing/hunting. Kyla and her partner Josh live in Darwin River on the property they just purchased with 2 dogs, 2 horses and the naughtiest family member Ace who is a fully grown Brahman bull.
